Step one: identify which test it is

Fasting glucose (no food for 8+ hours)

A1C (average over ~2–3 months)
An A1C under 5.7% is considered normal, 5.7%–6.4% falls in the prediabetes range, and 6.5% or above is in the diabetes range. Because A1C reflects an average, it smooths out the day-to-day swings a single glucose reading can show.
